Following the failure of a tube in a four year old, 3 MW water tube boiler the following is drawn to your attention.
The rear D tube was found to have developed transverse cracking externally at the weld to the sealing strip in the furnace chamber between the rear wall tubes and the D tube. This has occurred at both the top and bottom of the D tube in five (3 top—2 bottom) places. A subsequent inspection, indications of cracking were detected in the tube at each of the transverse welds on the sealing strip and beginning to propagate into the D tube.
